What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is based upon a belief in the body's innate natural ability to heal itself when given the appropriate internal and external healing environment. Traditional Naturopaths are not involved in the practice of medicine, and do not use drugs or pharmaceuticals. In reality, Naturopathy deals with wellness and relief from conditions which are the result of stress - whether from mental, nutritional, environmental, or physical factors. The Naturopath tailors the healing method to the needs of the individual, with modalities which are effective for chronic or acute problems. Methods used by Naturopaths may include nutrition, herbology, accupressure, bodywork, relaxation techniques, iridology, exercise, or supplemental regemins. Naturopaths cooperate with all branches of medical science, referring individuals to other practitioners for diagnosis or treatment when appropriate. The Naturopathic philosophy advocates a number of principles:

1. Recognize the healing power of nature. The human body is created with the capacity to heal itself and to maintain health. There is a healing power in nature and this principle is the basis for all of naturopathy. Naturopathy is a system designed to work in harmony with nature in the restoration and support for the inherent natural healing systems of the body.

2. Identify the cause. Naturopaths are committed to removing a problem by removing the cause. This is, to the naturopath, the most plausible way of eliminating the symptoms and restoring health to the person.

3. Identify the source. Naturopaths are aware that a person can have a physical, spiritual, or emotional illness. Even if a person appears physically fit, she/he cannot be well if a mental or spiritual problem is present. The chosen therapy is determined by what kind of problem the person is experiencing.

4. Treat the total person. Other than in trauma type injuries, the body seldom has isolated conditions but rather experiences disease as a consequence of a number of health debilitating events.

5. Teach rather than treat. Naturopathic philosophy places the responsibility for wellness with the individual. We are stewards of our bodies, and the naturopath is the teacher or advisor to the individual on how to maintain health.

6. Do no harm. Certainly anyone who is sick does not need any therapy or treatment to harm them. Traditional naturopathy embraces therapies designed to enhance healing and produce wellness.

7. Prevent disease. It is admirable that there is an effective system based on natural restorative methods. However, it is preferable for the body not to experience imbalances and their resulting consequences. Naturopaths are prepared to advise clients on simple disease prevention principles which are designed to produce health and avoid the destructive consequences which occur as the result of violating those principles.
